The Arts Council of Wilson welcomes to the stage of the historic Boykin Center The Countyline Bluegrass Band on Friday, November 12th at 7:30pm. This group of talented musicians, which hail from Wilson, Johnson, Nash and Wayne counties, will be performing bluegrass favorites as they've done for over twenty years.

The six members of the group include Canithe Wood, who plays fiddle and provides vocals. Canithe is an original member of the band and will delight the audience with his fiddle expertise which he’s been honing since childhood. Kenny Pierce, the other original member, plays the mandolin, which is the same instrument played by the legendary "founding father" of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. Other members include Gerald Flowers on bass, Steve James on banjo, and Rick Landgreby and Tom White playing guitar and providing vocal accompaniment.

According to Canithe Wood, the musicians began playing together over twenty years ago at the Wilson Arts Council. They enjoyed the experience so much that they began gathering routinely at an old country store for musical jam sessions. Around 1992, they were invited by Jerome Vick to begin playing at his Countyline Bluegrass Barn, located on Hornes Church Road in Wilson County. They have become so related to this popular music venue that they’ve taken the Countyline Bluegrass name as their own.

Bluegrass music is experiencing a resurgence in popularity due to films such as Oh Brother Where Art Thou? which was released in 2000. This American music genre relies primarily on stringed acoustic instruments like those used in Bill Monroe's original band, Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. This band's success promoting old time mountain music led to the music being named bluegrass. The Countyline Bluegrass Band will be playing beloved Bill Monroe tunes, as well as songs by more recent bluegrass favorites such as Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder. They will also delight the audience with waltz tunes and songs featuring banjo "picking."

Be sure not to miss The Countyline Bluegrass Band at the Boykin Center, 124 Nash St. SW in Wilson, NC on Friday, November 12th at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 and are available by contacting the Arts Council box office at (252)291-4329 or visiting the website at www.wilsonarts.com. The Arts Partner for this performance is First Media Radio.
